   First off, let me clarify something. When I started off trading in the stock market many years ago I told myself over and over again that trading stock is for dummies because for the first 2-3 years all I did was lose money on almost every trade. So I was actually talking about myself. I was the dummy for not knowing what I was getting myself into first. Knowledge is the key.

   I’ll never forget the day that I came across my first book with the title of, "Trading Stock For Dummies", wow did that get my attention and so I had to buy it right away and I thank the author everyday because that book hit home hard. It’s all about educating yourself by reading, start with the basics, do research and keep reading and keep researching… and start with the basics.   

   When trading stocks its important to know the basic information on stocks.  What are they?  How they are classified and what is the process?

    Stocks are basically a portion of ownership in a company.  Purchased shares entitles you to a portion of that particular companies assets and earnings.  The reason for trading stocks or shares is so that the company that is selling the shares can receive capital or make a financial profit. Because of this, stocks generally yield a profit shortly after the time of purchase or in the long term, further in time.

   There are two ways for stocks to be profitable.  One is through dividends, which is when a company’s profits are paid out as income to the shareholders.  Or when you trade the stock at a price that is higher than when you originally purchased and paid for the stock.

   There are two common types of stocks.  Common stocks and Preferred stocks.

   Preferred stocks are stocks that allow the companies owners first claim to the companies assets, over that of the common stock owners.  These stocks types do not generally allow voting rights nor do they pay based on the performance of the company.  The payout is normally very predictable, as the dividends are established upfront.

   Common stocks are stocks that generally allow voting rights.  One is normally entitled to receive dividends if and when the board of directors decides to pay them out.  Common stocks also allow for the share holder to receive income as the companies performance does well.  These stocks are generally the preferred ones of investors.

   Stocks are traded two ways.  Through investment bankers and brokerage houses or through individual investors.  What normally happens is once a company decides to go public, meaning they place their shares up for individuals outside of their company to purchase, these two types of investors will begin trading.

   Stocks are traded by the brokerage houses or investment bankers on the exchanges.  One such exchange is the NYSE or New York Stock Exchange, which is the largest exchange in the world.  Companies that are new or unable to trade their stocks on the exchange, generally list and trade on the OTC markets or Over-the-counter markets.  These stock trades are done solely between the broker and the buyers, not the brokerage house of investment bank.  The NASDAQ is a electronic stock trading system that allows investors and buyer to keep track of the trading on the OTC market.

   A few things to keep in mind when trading stocks.  Most stocks traded through a brokerage house or investment bank will either charge a fee or a commission.  Also bear in mind that the stock certificates are normally in the name of the brokerage house, for easy transferability.

   When trading stocks these are just a few basic things that you should know.
